Mercerization defined

The recoil factors r define the probability of whether an attached radioactive atom desorbs from the particle surface in consequence of an alpha decay or not. Mercer and Strowe (1971) found a recoil factor = 0.81 in their chamber studies in contradiction to the value of ri 0.4 measured by Kolerski et al. (1973). No other results about the recoil factor are available in the literature.

This section will define the reactions involved in the formation of palmitic and stearic acids. A review by Stumpf (1977) examines the biosynthesis of saturated fatty acids in plants. More specialized reviews are those of Givan and Harwood (1976) and those found in Recent Advances in the Chemistry and Biochemistry of Plant Lipids, edited by Galliard and Mercer (1975). Early work on cellulose II provided information sufficient enough to define unit cells of cellulose II as monoclinical and assign them to space group P2i. It was also affirmed that two chains aligned on the two-fold screw axes of the cell and every two antiparallel cellobiose segments were sta ered by about 2.5 A (c/4). Sizes of unit cell parameters for cellulose II regenerated and mercerized obtained, respectively, by Kolpak et al. and Langan et al. are presented in Table 21.3 [5]. 

In water-NAPL systems, NAPL may exist as a continuous mass (mobile phase or free phase), which can flow under a hydraulic gradient, or as individual ganglia or blobs (residual phase), which are more difficult to mobilize hydraulically. The residual saturation, S, defines the NAPL saturation (VNAPL/I voids) below which NAPL distribution is discontinuous. Typical residual saturation values for soils and sands range from 26% to 75% (Thibodeaux 1996), but have been reported as low as 15-25% (Bedient et al., 1997). In separate field studies, free-phase DNAPL (Pankow and Cherry, 1996) and LNAPL (Huntley et al., 1994) were detected at saturation values as low as 15% and 25%, respectively. In unsaturated soil, typical residual saturation values are between 5% and 20% (Bedient et al., 1997), whereas in saturated soil, residual saturation may be 15-50% of the total pore space (Mercer and Cohen, 1990).
