In addition to the customary isomorphous heavy metal derivatives, a mercury atom was inserted between the half-cystine groups which form the interchain disulfide bond (31) in the Bence Jones protein (X-S-Hg-S-X) by a method devised by Steiner and Blumberg (32) the disulfide bond is reduced with mercaptoethanol, excess reducing agent is removed by gel filtration, and mercuric acetate is then added. The disulfide bond which is reduced originates at the half-cystine adjacent to the C-terminal residue of each X chain in the dimer. [Pg.221]
