Toya et al. [13] used X-ray tomography to scan gas/liquid flow in a corrugated structured packing known as Sulzer Mellapak 250 Y. The solids profile of the dry structured packing was reproduced with fair accuracy. The scan was performed in a 60-cm-diameter column. Very thin liquid film flowing past the structure at 0.006 m/s was also detected by the tomography unit. [Pg.60]

Pilot-plant experiments have been carried out at real process conditions in the coke plant August Thyssen (Duisburg, Germany). The DN 100 pilot column (Fig. 9.11) was made from stainless steel and equipped with about 4 m of structured packing (Sulzer MELLAPAK 350Y), three liquid distributors, and a digital control system. Several steady-state experiments have been compared with the simulation results and supported the design optimization of the coke gas purification process [91]. [Pg.289]

Mellapak (Fig. 8.11 a). Mellapak has grooved and perforated surfaces. Adjacent elements are rotated 90°. The crimp angle is 45°, and the crimp apex is sharp. Mellapak is available in several types. The Mellapak number denotes the nominal surface area of the packing per unit volume (m2/m3). The suffix denotes the angle of orientation to the vertical axis Y signifies 45°, X signifies 60°. For instance, Mellapak 250.Y has a surface area of 250 m2/m3, and a 45° angle of orientation to the vertical axis. Mellapak is available in metals and plastics from Sulzer Chemtech in Switzerland. [Pg.448]

For structured packings, tests with the Koch-Sulzer BX and CY wire-mesh packings and with Mellapak 250Y showed no diameter effect on HETP (3,19,32,33). Wu and Chen (167) state that the same applies to Gempak packings. On the other hand, tests with Hyperfil showed an increase in HETP with column diameter (168). [Pg.554]

In the same decade, the manufacturers Sulzer and Montz increased the range of structured packings, with specific packing ranges from 100 to 750 m m and channel angles of 30°-type X and 45°-type Y. They launched the newly developed, high-efficiency structured Optiflow packing as well as Mellapak Plus [30, 31],... [Pg.16]

Mellapak (Fig. 26A), produced by Sulzer Company, is the most widely used stractured packing. It has proven excellent performance in columns widi diameters up to 15 m. It is supplied in sheet metal thicknesses from 0.1 mm up. [Pg.427]
