Melatonin mental effects

It is clear, however, that melatonin has short-term mental effects. It definitely can cause drowsiness when taken during the day. Melatonin taken at night, however, will not cause daytime sleepiness. People who take melatonin are also less likely to respond correctly to visual and auditory signals. They are more likely to make mistakes and their reaction time decreases when they take this hormone. Several studies have shown that taking melatonin inhibits a person s ability to concentrate and can cause confusion. People should therefore not take it when they need to stay alert, such as when they will be driving a car. The effects begin within... [Pg.303]

Paradoxically, when taken with other drugs, melatonin may have very different mental effects. It tends to stimulate some of the biochemical effects caused by methamphetamines it can end up aggravating insomnia, instead of causing sleepiness, when taken with these drugs. Taking melatonin with benzodiazepines has been reported to cause anxiety. [Pg.304]

Timing is critical for melatonin to be effective if it is given at the wrong time for sleep disorders or jet lag, it can cause increased daytime sleepiness (5,7) and worsened mental performance (8). Drowsiness and a small fall in body temperature are commonly reported effects (9), particularly after daytime administration, when endogenous concentrations of melatonin are low. [Pg.495]

Brun et al. (216) evaluated the mental performance, hormone levels, and temperatures of eight sleep-deprived volunteers given 300-mg of modafinil at 22 00 and 08 00. Modafinil did not affect melatonin, cortisol, or growth hormone levels, but it did attenuate performance decrements, attenuate the nocturnal decrease in body temperature, and increase daytime body temperature. These temperature effects are different from what has been observed in non-sleep-deprived subjects. Bourdon et al. (217) found no effects of 200 mg of modafinil on thermal balance in neutral conditions and no effect on thermoregulation in cold conditions (despite a tendency toward greater reductions in core temperature when modafinil was applied in a cold environment). However, these authors did not examine temperature effects beyond 3 hr in the morning. The differences with... [Pg.426]

Melatonin has side effects, but much less so than pharmaceutical sleeping pills. Long-term safety is not known. Prolonged use may have an influence on sex organs and reduce libido. It may slightly lower blood pressure. People with the symptoms of severe mental illness, severe allergies, autoimmune diseases, or immune system cancers such as leukemia should not... [Pg.150]
