Dichlorobenzidine has been detected in the mine of workers in 3,3 -dichlorobenzidine-handling plants under conditions which favored inhalation of 3,3 -dichlorobenzddine-boimd particulate matter (Handke et al. 1986 London and Boiano 1986 Meigs et al. 1954). Under these conditions, it is reasonable to expect that some of the 3,3 -dichlorobenzidine foimd in the mine could have come from inhalation exposure. However, conditions in the plants were also conducive to dermal exposure. Therefore, some of the 3,3 -dichlorobenzidine dose foimd in the urine could have come from dermal exposure. In addition, since the mucocilliaiy clearance mechanism moves most of the larger particulates (5-10 m) out of the lungs...

Dr. Meigs had heated a specimen of vermiculite in a candle flame and had shown del Rio the worm-like filaments which shoot out from it. Under the blowpipe, the Mexican scientist obtained from it oblique prisms nearly an inch long, which were also crooked and worm-like. Vermiculite is a hydrous silicate generally produced by alteration of mica.

This chapter deals with botulinum toxin type A (BOTOX) in the treatment of strabismus, blepharospasm, and related disorders. Botulinum toxin type A (BOTOX) has been used to treat strabismus, blepharospasm, Meige s syndrome, and spasmodic torticollis. By preventing acetylcholine release at me neuromuscular junction, botulinum toxin A usually causes a temporary paralysis of the locally injected muscles. The variability in duration of paralysis may be related to me rate of developing antibodies to me toxin, upregulation of nicotinic cholinergic postsynaptic receptors, and aberrant regeneration of motor nerve fibers at me neuromuscular junction. Complications related to this toxin include double vision (diplopia) and lid droop (ptosis).
