Medium-size processes

As with most aspects of downstream processing, the operation of chromatographic systems is highly automated and is usually computer controlled. Whereas medium-sized process-scale chromatographic columns (e.g. 5-151 capacity) are manufactured from toughened glass or plastic, larger... [Pg.140]

In this book, we concentrate largely on methods for the computer manipulation of small and medium-sized molecules, molecules of up to a few hundred or thousand atoms. We do this to develop an understanding of the methods available for the processing of information on chemical compounds and reactions. However, many of these methods can also be applied to macromolecules such as proteins and nucleic acids. [Pg.6]

Medium-sized loads are often processed ia a beU furnace, as shown ia Figure 2. The operation of this furnace is opposite to that of an elevator furnace the work load is placed on a stationary hearth and the furnace is lowered over the hearth. BeU furnaces are often arranged with two or more bases (hearths) which permit more efficient use of the furnace because one base can be unloaded/loaded as the furnace carries out a heating cycle on another base. [Pg.133]

The chemical properties of cycHc ketones also vary with ring size. Lower members (addition reactions, than corresponding acycHc ketones. The Cg—C 2 ketones are unreactive, reflecting the strain and high enol content of medium-sized ring systems. Lactones are prepared from cycHc ketones by the Bayer-ViUiger oxidation reaction with peracids. S-Caprolactone is manufactured from cyclohexane by this process ... [Pg.500]

Production Rc-quirc-mc-nts. Production of commodity chemicals usuaHy requkes large dedicated plants, generaHy in continuous operation and often with a proprietary process. A basic raw material position is preferred and is sometimes requked. Specialty chemicals, on the other hand, requke smaH- to medium-sized batch-type plants with inherent flexibHity. A basic raw material position is rarely requked. [Pg.536]

Segments. Segments for heavy-duty use such as for medium-sized tmcks ate produced by a dry-mix process. The fiber, modifiers, and a dry novolak resin are mixed in an appropriate mixer. The blend is then formed into about a 60 by 90 cm preform (or briquet) at 3—4 MPa (400—600 psi). The briquets are hot-pressed for 3—10 min at 140—160°C and then cooled. The resin is only partially cured at this point to be thermoplastic when subsequently reheated for bending. The hot-pressed preforms are then cut to desired size and bent at 170—190°C and cured in curved molds for 4—8 h at 220—280°C. Final grinding produces the finished segments. [Pg.274]

The production process is comparatively simple, even though — of course — the respective know-how is also decisive. The equipment for the production of sintered PVC separators is suitable in size and production capacity to be operated on its own by individual, medium-sized, starter battery plants, in contrast to the far larger units required for the production of polyethylene pocket material. [Pg.265]
