Haber knew the likely reason for his failure. He d knocked at the door of a social bastion where his sort weren t welcome. At that time, no Prussian Jew had ever become a reserve officer, except in the medical corps. The rejection was a powerful reminder, if Haber needed any, that his heritage was a social handicap and that his father s cautions were grounded in reality. 

From 1950 to 1954, he was a staff member at the Chicago Institute for Psychoanalysis and was in private practice in Chicago. After two years of active duty in the Medical Corps of the Naval Reserve, Dr. Szasz in 1956 joined the faculty of the Upstate Medical Center of the State University of New York at Syracuse as Professor of Psychiatry. He has also been a Visiting Professor of Psychiatry at the University of Wisconsin and at Marquette University and has lectured widely in colleges, law schools, medical schools, and to lay groups.
