Pourbaix diagrams for the aqueous Cd-S, Cd-Te, Cd-Se, Cu-In-Se, and Sb-S systems have been compiled and discussed by Savadogo [26] in his review regarding chemically and electrochemically deposited thin Aims for solar energy materials. Dremlyuzhenko et al. [27] analyzed theoretically the mechanisms of redox reactions in the Cdi xMn , Te and Cdi- , Zn i Te aqueous systems and evaluated the physicochemical properties of the semiconductor surfaces as a function of pH. 

The most important single development in the understanding of the mechanisms of redox reactions has probably been the recognition and establishment of outer-sphere and inner-sphere processes. Outer-sphere electron transfer involves intact (although not completely undisturbed) coordination shells of the reactants. In inner-sphere redox reactions, there are marked changes in the coordination spheres of the reactants in the formation of the activated complex. 

Weiss published a paper in 1954 giving a number of modeling ideas concerning the molecular-level mechanism of redox reactions in solution. In 1956 Marcus published (independently) a paper containing similar ideas, but also applied them to electrode reactions. From these works there followed an equation ...

The two types of electron transfer in a redox reaction at semiconductors can be distinguished by a number of experimental methods (12,13,14). The mechanisms of some redox reactions at germanium electrodes are summarized In Table I. It is seen that the mechanism of redox reactions with positive normal potentials is associated with the valence band, whereas the mechanism of redox reactions with more negative normal potentials is associated with the conduction band if there is any reaction at all. The situation remains the same when the electrode is moderately polarized in the anodic or cathodic direction. An example is shown in Fig. 11 using a redox system with properties equivalent to those assumed In Fig. 10.
