MMO has been identified as a member of the binuclear octahedral iron family (Woodland et al., 1986 Fox et al., 1988). The enzyme can hydrox-ylate a wide variety of hydrocarbons, including some toxic waste compounds hence, the enzyme has elicited considerable interest beyond its contribution to binuclear iron chemistry and mechanisms of oxygen activation. Although we do not have a crystal structure and have only limited spectroscopic data, the properties of the enzyme indicate that it should be considered with the other oxygen-activating binuclear iron proteins. [Pg.248]

Also Other mechanisms of oxygen activation by flavohydroquinone have been postulated, among others the formation of oxaziridines, dioxetanes and carbonyl oxides but the resulting chromophores would probably absorb at wavelengths shorter than 370 nm. However, Bruice and his co-workers gathered... [Pg.95]

The problem of determining the nature of the reaction between Q and substrate has proven difficult to solve, but it has also opened a new avenue of thought into the oxygen activation processes in general. For over 30 years, the mechanism of oxygen activation for attack on unactivated hydro-earbons has been assumed to be that proposed for P-450, in which a porphyrin Fe(IV)=0 71 cation radical is formed whieh subsequently abstracts... [Pg.236]
