Mechanical pulping processes

The nature of mechanical pulping processes means that they do not directly present any air emission problems. Problems are, however, possible at the point of electric power generation, if this is from combustion sources. Pulp mills often use on-site thermal power generation. Control of these potential emission sources is discussed later.

Mechanical pulping utilizes steam, pressure, and high temperature to tear the fibers. Newspaper and paperboards are typical products of the mechanical pulping process. Mechanical pulping is done in 300 series stainless steel containers to prevent corrosion.

Corrosion in mechanical pulping processes was investigated by Crowe [202] via weight loss tests and potentiody-namic polarization tests. Vapor phase condensate corrosion was more severe than liquid phase corrosion.
