Inorganic membranes (29,36) are generaUy more stable than their polymeric counterparts. Mechanical property data have not been definitive for good comparisons. Critical research needs include definition of thresholds for adverse health effects and how these thresholds vary with exposure concentration and duration. Such data would be valuable for affirming AEGL values. Additionally, the mode of dimethylhydrazine toxicity is not fully understood and, therefore, research providing insight into the underlying mechanism(s) of dimethylhydrazine toxicity would reduce current uncertainties in quantitative health risk issues. 

The mechanism is in complete agreement with results from recent tryptophan fluorescence experiments (which, due to the inviolability of microscopic reversibility, also hold in the synthesis mode) that establish definitively that (i) P, cannot simply bind spontaneously, (ii) an enzyme species with all three catalytic sites occupied is the only catalytically competent species, and (iii) release of product and binding of substrate caimot be simultaneous, rather product release must precede substrate binding [38]. 

Besides self trapping two alternative explanations, Fermi resonance and conformational substates, have been previously discussed as well [2]. In a recent study [6] we compared the 2D-IR spectrum of ACN with those of two molecular systems, which show the same splitting in the amide I band, and which were chosen as simple representatives of the alternative mechanisms. The three 2D-IR spectra differ completely, albeit in a well understood way. Based on the 2D-IR spectroscopic signature Fermi resonance and conformational sub-states can be definitely excluded as alternative explanations for the anomalous spectra of ACN. The 2D-IR spectrum of the amide I mode in ACN, on the other hand, can be naturally explained by self-trapping, as dicussed above. 

The definition of an adhesion promoter in its most literal sense may be stated as any substance which when placed between two adherends results in a measurable increase in the force required to separate the two materials. This definition does not address the basic mechanism responsible for the increased adhesion nor does it concern itself with the mode by which the promoter is contacted with the adherend surface, i.e. as primer, by in situ incorporation into an adhesive or coating, or by other means.
