For a long time there was not a book focused on covering the element of OSHA Mechanical integrity. In 2006, the CCPS published Guidelines for Mechanical Integrity Systems. This text provides practitioners a basic familiarity of mechanical integrity concepts and best practices. The serious practitioner of mechanical integrity should consider this book.

As the mechanical integrity of the pump system changes, the amplitude of vibration levels change. In some cases, in order to identify the source of vibration, pump speed may have to be varied, as these problems are frequency- or resonance-dependent. Pump impeller imbalance and cavitation are related to this category. Table 10-11 classifies different types of pump-related problems, their possible causes and corrective actions. 

It is also important to assure that corrosion, erosion, or other damage has not affected the system to the point that it can no longer safely contain the design pressure. Maintaining mechanical integrity once the system has been placed in service is discussed later in this chapter. 

One useful by-product of improved PSM and ESH management can be a reduction in non-incident- or non-accident-related downtime. This arises because the improved systems provide the vehicle for improved mechanical integrity, better understanding of the design and operation and better statistical analysis of performance.
