Mebendazole with metronidazole

In a randomized trial in 100 Iranian children, mebendazole (200 mg tds for 5 days, n — 50) was compared with metronidazole (5 mg/kg tds for 7 days, n = 50) in giardiasis (32). The two drugs were equally effective (over 85% cure rates). There were no adverse effects of mebendazole, whereas nausea, anorexia, and metallic taste were respectively observed in 4.9, 6, and 24% of those taking metronidazole. 

The imidazoles comprise a large and diverse group of compounds with properties encompassing antibacterial (metronidazole), antiprotozoal (metronidazole), antifungal (clotrimazole, miconazole, ketoconazole, econazole) and anthelmintic (mebendazole) activity see Table 10.4. 

A case control study was conducted in an attempt to identify risk factors associated with an outbreak of Stevens-Johnson syndrome/toxie epidermal neeroly sis that occurred amongst Filipino workers in Taiwan. The risk of developing this serious condition was significantly higher in workers who had taken both metronidazole and mebendazole sometime in the preceding 6 weeks (odds ratio of 9.5). In addition, there was an increase in risk with higher doses of metronidazole. ... 

ABSTRACT. The bioavailahility of pharraaca which dissolve in water only with difficulty is very limited. The cyclodextrins /CDs/, and primarily A-Ct) and CD, were successfully applied to increase the dissolution characteristics and hence the bioavailahility of drugs furosemide, hydrochlorothiazide, mebendazole, metronidazole, spironolactone, tofisopam, vinpocetine base, etc. Prom these pharraaca, products were made by mixing, kneading, grinding, freeze-drying, spray-embedding and precipitation. 

Miconazole was originally marketed only for topical use in a 2% cream, lotion and powder. Allergic contact dermatitis to miconazole has recently been described. De Greef et al. (16 ) noted aggravation in 8 of 108 patients treated with the 2% cream, of whom one had a positive patch test to 2% miconazole. Van Ketel(17 -) described patch tests in one patient with a clinical reaction to the cream after 6 weeks use, with a positive patch test to 2% miconazole in vaseline and negative tests to the related imidazole derivatives mebendazole, tinidazole and metronidazole.
