The relative size of the atoms is important. According to Hume-Rothery, Mabbott and Evans , a continuous series of solid solutions may be formed over the whole range of concentrations if the sizes of the atoms of the two metals do not differ by more than 15 per cent. The limiting value of this ratio is by no means definitely established and depends to some extent on other factors such as the coordination number. 

An anlysis of this question meets complications since in a purely one-dimensional substance the fluctuations exclude the existence of an order parameter (i.e., a phase transition) at finite temperatures. The fluctuations can be suppressed by means of the intercahin hopping but the impurities may prevent this process. The study of the influence of a smooth random potential (the potential (l) in our notations) in the work ] shows that what concerns fluctuations both types of transitions are suppressed by impurities, i.e., there is no gain on this way. One must have in mind however, that the fluctuation are imposed on the purely one-dimensional pairing and the absence of the latter means definitely no pairing even with hopping. 

The ideas expressed above illustrate possible relationships between thermal decomposition mechanisms and electronic structure. The correlations possible to date are by no means definitive, but in some cases strongly suggest their relevance. The approach is also discussed and further qualified in Chapter 7, Section D, dealing with photodecomposition. 

With due notice of the GSN challenges referred to in Section 2.5, Fig. 2.4 is intended to provide a starting point for anyone trying to compile a GSN argument for a CS25.1309 compliant System Safety Assessment. It is, therefore, the application which governs the selection of the most appropriate mean. Usually, enough is known about the process under study to be able to identify some fundamentals which can then be used as a starting point. The fundamental relations may be oversimplified or inadequate to describe the process fiiUy, but it is still better to use these relations than to pick the mean definition out of a hat ... 

The total number of samples that have been characterized by the teams at NASA-Langley and Old Dominion University is 60 for all three missions, with the remaining spaces being utilized by Paragon Optical. We are on the upward slope of a learning curve. Some early conclusions are possible but they are by no means definitive.
