Meal, oily

The active ingredient of Xenical, orlistat, is a pancreatic lipase inhibitor. Side-effects include faecal urgency, liquid oily stools and flatulence. Xenical capsules are administered before, during or up to 1 hour after the two main meals, twice daily. [Pg.42]

Commercial blasting explosives contain ammonium nitrate, wood meal, oil and TNT. A mixture of ammonium nitrate, water and oily fuels produces an emulsion slurry which is also used in commercial blasting explosives. Small glass or plastic spheres containing oxygen can be added to emulsion slurries to increase its sensitivity to detonation. [Pg.47]

The apricot flesh is very sweet, with the seed kernels regarded the best part of the fruit, tasting sweet and oily, very much like almonds. (It may be noted that the apricot is of the genus Prunus of the plant family Rosaceae, as are peaches and almonds.) Apricot oil is squeezed out under pressure from the ground flour or meal and looks much like ohve oil. A spoonful may be taken as needed, and the oil is also used for deep-frying. Other uses include external apphcations, and it is also mentioned that the oil will even shine silverware. (The preceding information indicates that the apricot kernels are utilized raw, without roasting.)... [Pg.207]

Absorption of vitamin A appears to be facilitated by the simultaneous absorption of fat. Poor absorption has been demonstrated in the steatorrheas, such as sprue and celiac disease, and in infectious hepatitis. Aqueous emulsions of vitamin A have been found to be more adequately absorbed than oily preparations, particularly in conditions associated with poor absorption of fat. Liquid petrolatum, administered with meals, interferes considerably with absorption of carotene and to a less extent with that of vitamin A. [Pg.544]

In addition, the polyunsaturated fatty acids in fish oil (the (o3 series of long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids section 4.3.1-1) have a further protective effect, reducing the stickiness of blood platelets, and hence reducing the risk of blood clot formation. Figure 7.11 shows the beneficial effect of consuming a modest amount of oily fish on the incidence of coronary heart disease — even one fish meal a week reduces the risk to... [Pg.204]

As with meat, the main production of whole fish does not offer any scope for the decanter, but the bulk production of fish meal certainly does. Fish meal is a coarsely ground powder, high in protein, made from the cooked flesh of fish. Though formerly important as a fertilizer, fish meal is now primarily used in animal feed. The oily fish, such as menhaden, anchovy, herring, sand eel and pilchard, are the main source offish meal and its companion product, fish oil. To be processed into meal, chopped fish is fed by a screw conveyor through long steam cookers. The cooked mash is then pressed to remove water and oil. [Pg.137]

Physical properties of foods—Foods that stick to tooth surfaces and that are slowly soluble promote caries. Eiquid foods, in comparison to sticky or retentive foods, tend to have lower cariogenicity. Therefore, honey and the sugars of dried fruits can contribute to dental caries as well as refined sugar and the products made from it. Sometimes, raw fibrous foods are recommended for between meal snacks. These foods generally require more chewing and stimulate saliva flow, but they do not clean the teeth. Increased saliva flow is beneficial. Also, fats, which produce a protective oily film on the surface of the teeth serve as a barrier of acid penetration to the enamel. [Pg.264]
