Intermolecular forces are the attractive forces that hold molecules and ions together. These forces should not be confused with the intramolecular forces that hold the atoms together in a covalent molecule (see Lesson 11, Molecular Structure ). Intermolecular forces are grouped into four classifications, each supporting the existence of the condensed states of matter solids and liquids. In addition, these forces can also explain the nonideal behavior of certain gases.

Carbohydrates, substances having the general composition of Cx (H20)x, are central to planet Earth s survival and sustainability. Carbohydrates result from the solar energy-driven reduction of carbon dioxide by photosynthesis. Photosynthesis generates both carbohydrate matter (solids) and oxygen (gas). The reduction of carbon dioxide to carbohydrates and oxygen (plus water) requires 112kcal/mol of CO2 [1]. 

SURFACES constitute the boundaries of condensed matter, solids, and liquids. Surface chemistry explores the structure and composition of surfaces and the bonding and reactions of atoms and molecules on them. There are many macroscopic physical phenomena that occur on surfaces or are controlled by the electronic and physical properties of surfaces. These include heterogeneous catalysis, corrosion, crystal growth, evaporation, lubrication, adhesion, and integrated circuitry. Surface chemistry examines the science of these phenomena as well.
