A mathematical device, the NSS, which can be related to Artificial Intelligence techniques, has been defined and applied in order to solve or reformulate some quantum chemical problems. This symbol is related to computer formulae generation. It has been shown that by means of the use of NSS s many applications of such symbols can be found in mathematics as well as in Mathematical Chemistry in particular. [Pg.246]

At Harvard, Theodore William Richards, like Noyes, inherited a course in theoretical chemistry. He renamed it physical chemistry. However, he cautioned students that the molecular kinetic hypotheses might prove ephemeral, and, to the young Lewis s consternation, Richards showed contempt for the notion of chemical bonds. The basic theories of physics - classical mechanics and electromagnetism, relativity theory, quantum mechanics, statistical mechanics, quantum electrodynamics - support the theoretical apparatus which is used in molecular sciences. The concept of "mathematical chemistry had been already used by M.V. Lomonosov [1] and later on in the 19th century by Du Bois-Reymond, but for a long time it became inapplicable, apparently due to the lack of a distinct field for its application. As a rule, it was, and has remained, preferable to speak about the application of mathematical methods in chemistry rather than about "mathematical chemistry . To our mind, it is now quite correct to treat mathematical chemistry as a specific field of investigation. Its equations are primarily those of chemical kinetics, i.e. ordinary differential equations with a specific polynomial content. We treat these equations relative to heterogeneous catalytic systems. [Pg.1]

But one other fact is also of interest a reverse movement has started, away from chemical kinetics. Formulation of the problems that have arisen here attract the attention of mathematicians and physicists working in various fields and having a variety of tastes.
