Combining peptide sequences and synthetic polymers is useful not only for enhanced control over nanoscale structure formation, but also for production of biologically interactive materials. Biomimetic hybrid polymers may also produce sophisticated superstructures with new material properties. Smart materials based on polypeptides may reversibly change conformation and associated properties in response to an environmental stimulus, such as a shift in pH or temperature (Rodriguez-Hernandez et ah, 2005). Polypeptide block copolymers may also be used as model systems to study generic self-assembly processes in natural proteins. Obviously, such materials could be of significant interest for a variety of biomedical and bioanalytical applications.

In this paper we attempt a preliminary investigation on the feasibility of catalytic combustion of CO/ H2 mixtures over mixed oxide catalysts and a comparison in this respect of perovskite and hexaaluminate type catalysts The catalysts have been characterized and tested in the combustion of CO, H2 and CH4 (as reference fuel). The catalytic tests have been carried out on powder materials and the results have been scaled up by means of a mathematical model of the catalyst section of the Hybrid Combustor. 

Before a task or hybrid task can be modeled, the material balance and the pressure of the operation must first be specified. To specify the material balance, a matrix of product recoveries can be specified as illustrated in Figure 11.24. This example involves six components and three products. Components are arranged in order of their volatility. It follows that components in a product must all be adjacent, and a component can only distribute between adjacent products. Also, the lightest component of Product (i + 1) must be heavier than the lightest component in Product i and the heaviest component of Product (i + 1) must be heavier than the heaviest component of Product i. In this way, the material balance for each of the tasks and hybrid tasks can be specified.
