To achieve these goals—to start this, the third Industrial Revolution—will require vision and commitment, but so did the landing on the moon. The scale of the effort could exceed that of the Marshall Plan. It is debatable how much time we have or how much climate change we can live with. It is also debatable how much of our economic resources should be devoted to stabilizing or reversing humankind s growing carbon footprint. What is not debatable is that we have to do it if humankind s future is to be different from that of the dinosaurs ...

Centred on Paris, the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) developed out of the Organisation for European Economic Cooperation (OEEC), which was set up in 1948 as part of the Marshall Plan to promote a sound European economy. The countries of the Eastern Bloc refused to join, and set up their own organisation—CMEA. 

The sulfur industry, at this point, was relatively unknown to the general public a publicity campaign was launched to promote the importance of this exciting industry. The second quality that distinguished Truman from most politicians and most CEOs was that he was always willing to put his money where his mouth was. He made hard decisions and suffered the consequences. He left the glory to others while he took a great deal of blame. The sign on his desk said the buck stops here, and it did. But he often let the credit for good deeds stop elsewhere. His plan to rebuild Europe was called the Marshall Plan, because he knew that Congress was much more likely to approve a plan named after a popular seaetary of state than one named after an unpopular president. Truman s dedication was to the institution not to himself.

One surmises that the would-be problem solvers have failed to recognize the relevant relationships described by stories. They apparently lack the requisite knowledge for making decisions based on such recognition. Moreover, they rarely display evidence of creating problem-solving plans that use important relational information gleaned from the stories. For the most part, as students I interviewed often insisted, a number of the problems just do not make sense to them (Marshall, 1981). Moreover, the perceived senselessness of the problems does not seem to bother the students they do not expect otherwise.
