It s what it must have been like for them, for Anthony and Elizabeth, never knowing what had happened. Where the boys were. If they were alive or dead. .. The chitchat is desultory, not taking up much of my attention. Is Mark really thinking of the Chantry s past, as I am Or is it my mind that fills this other—this Mark-shaped person sitting in the sun—with my moments, my memories, and believes them to be his I can t know him, I can t feel what he feels or see what he sees, any more than I can read Elizabeth and Anthony in their books. I want to reach forward and shake him, push myself through the envelope of his body and find whatever s there, inside him. I want to know what he knew, what he was thinking, what I was to him then. 

That s Mark s word for it. I suppose it s quite suitable, really, though it makes it sound a bit grand. I could look a lot of it up, rather than doing all this driving. But it is... Feeling the distances between the places does help, especially with Anthony. ...

The dehydration of kaolinite has been the subject of several kinetic studies and Brett et al. [1] summarize the salient features of the mechanisms proposed for the sequence of reactions by which kaolinite is converted to mullite (920 to 1370 K). The first step, water loss, is most satisfactorily described by a two-dimensional diffusion equation. Brindley et al. [57] proposed this model from isothermal kinetic measurements (670 to 810 K) and reported a marked increase of in a maintained pressure of water vapour. Anthony and Gam [58] concluded that random nucleation is rate limiting at low pressures of water vapour and that this accounts for reports of first-order kinetic behaviour. Increase in the rate of nucleation, as the (HjO) is increased, is ascribed to a proton transfer mechanism, and acceleration of the growth process may result from contributions due to the onset of the reverse reaction.
