Abuse of phencyclidine hydrochloride (PCP) is a national problem that has reached epidemic proportions in urban areas of the United States. The drug is inexpensive, readily obtainable, and is usually used in combination with other drugs such as marijuana, heroin, cocaine, and alcohol (Golden et al. 1982). The routes of PCP use include inhalation, ingestion and parenteral administration. 

Phencyclidine (PCP) (angel dust, crystal) is often misrepresented as lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD) or THC. It is commonly smoked with marijuana (crystal joint) but can be taken orally or IV.

Participants used the pupillometer three occasions each week, on days when they provided a urine sample for drug testing. Urine was analyzed on-site for amphetamines, barbiturates, benzodiazepines, cocaine, marijuana metabolites, phencyclidine, and opiates. Table 29 shows the reported use of selected substances of potential abuse. Most frequently reported was marijuana (37% of respondents), followed by "other nartotics, opiates" (34%), tranquilizers (29%), amphetamines and other stimulants (18%), LSD (12%), barbiturates and other depressants (10%), cocaine (10%), phencyclidine (3%), and heroin (2%). 

In a retrospective, case-control study of the use of phencyclidine in 23 of 13 653 pregnant women, the phencyclidine users had smaller infants (2698 versus 3011 g), which may have been partly accounted for by a reduction in gestational age (37.3 versus 38.3 weeks) (24). The users were more likely to have used tobacco, alcohol, or marijuana and had a higher incidence of syphilis and diabetes mellitus. 

Phencyclidine is sold illicitly as powder, tablets, liquid, rock crystal, or mixed with leaves (marijuana, oregano, mint, and parsley). Phencyclidine is ingested, smoked, snorted, and injected intravenously. 

The NIDA drugs of abuse include five classes of compounds amphetamines, opiates, cocaine, phencyclidine, and tetrahydrocannibinol (marijuana). The analysis of these drugs includes both parent and degradation products. The key compounds for GC/MS analysis are discussed with the methods required for each of these compounds. 

PCP (phencyclidine), an anitpal tranquilizer, is often sold on the street in capsules or tablet a[s "THC," and falsely believed to be synthetic marijuana, wn t believe it for a minute. Real THC is much too expensive to produce or market for street use. PCP is also sprayed on parsley, catnip, mint leaves or weak marijuana and sold as "angel dust or "super grass." PCP has an extraordinarily high bummer potential, and in addition can cause an overdose if taken in too great an amount, or In concert with alcohol, barbiturates, methaqualone, etc.
