Several pharmaceutical activities of nucleic acid analogs such as poly(VAd) have been studied in vitro and in cell-free systems [19]. It was expected that the present polymers would be effectively transferred into phagocytes by encapsulating in polysaccharide-coated liposomes and would show increased pharmaceutical activities similar to poly(maleic acid-a/l-2-cyclohexyl-l, 3-dioxap-5-ene) (MA-CDA) [68]. The activation of human neutrophils by poly(VAd) was evaluated by monitoring the in vitro superoxide anion production from activated human neutrophils. During the past decade, MALDI-TOF MS has proven to be an effective tool for the analysis of oligo- and polymeric mannoglucans (for extensive reviews see [222,223]). SEC/MALDI mass spectrometry was employed in the analysis of hemicelluloses isolated by microwave heat-fractionation from spruce and aspen wood [94]. Codium cell-walls contain no crystalline mannan unless they are treated with boiling water. An orthorhombic unit-cell with a = 7.21 A (721 pm), b(fiber axis) = 10.27 A (1.027 nm), and c = 8.82 A (882 pm) was derived. Cell-wall material treated with 12-14% potassium hydroxide gave a different diagram, corresponding to mannan II. In a water-saturated atmosphere, the unit cell for mannan II is monoclinic, with a = 18.8 A (1.88 nm), fo(fiber axis) = 10.2 A (1.02 nm), c = 18.7 A (1.87 nm), and R = 57.5°. [Pg.398]
