The application of science is an intensely political problem for scientists who should engage in politics for only they can give appropriate information. A very extraordinary development would be if mankind corporately, yet voluntarily, recognised that through inheritance of mastery of external events it must accept responsibility for the whole ecosystem and act appropriately. That is no small act of responsibility with very far-reaching educational and poli-tical implications. [Pg.461]

Drug-related problems in the elderly is intended to serve as a source of information and clinical support in geriatric pharmacotherapy for students as well as all health care professionals, e.g. physicians, nurses and pharmacists. Pharmacotherapy is of great importance to all mankind. Drugs are however powerful and must be handled appropriately. This is especially important for elderly patients. [Pg.4]

To the Editor I should like to reply to Dr. Thomas Perry s letter published June 18, 1970. Dr. Perry s objections are well intentioned there is no doubt. Radiation is one area of science not well understood by the lay public, and often the media information relating to radioactivity is misleading and misunderstood. To some extent, the topics of radioactivity and radiation have become a political issue. The public is somewhat scientifically illiterate about radiation, and many people do not have a very clear understanding of the physical nature, sources, uses, benefits, and dangers of radiation and radioactivity. We can all learn more about radioactivity so that it can be used for the benefit of mankind without undue fear. After all, it is very natural and universal. Radioactivity takes place both inside and on the surface of our Earth. Not only does it exist in space, but it also is penetrating our bodies at all times from natural sources, and small amounts of radiation exist in our tissues and organs. It is our hope that the information contained in this volume will stimulate still another generation of scientists and engineers to realize the potential benefit to mankind of this abundant and ubiquitous resource. [Pg.8]

Given the low concentration and means of dispersal, the Tokyo subway sarin attack can be referred to as a passive attack. The implication of such an assumption is therefore that mankind has not yet witnessed a full-scale sarin attack in any major city. While valuable information can certainly be gained from the Tokyo subway sarin attack, the experience obtained from the more aggressive Matsumoto sarin attack and the Iran-Iraq war should also be considered when developing initiatives directed at dealing with a potential full-scale attack in the future where the effects will be more serious. [Pg.30]
