Manganese oxides, decompositions

It is also known that a metal oxide such as manganese oxide (Mn02) is effective for decomposition of H202. Ar. attempt to obtain 02 was carried out using metal oxide catalysts without photoirradiation. 

Still another explanation is that the thermal decomposition of MnC03 to MnO and the later slaking of MnO forms an alkaline environment. This process has occurred to some extent in the ore deposits however, it does not explain the fact that many of the native lead-pyrochroite veins occur in hausmannite ores, where the manganese oxides are altered or completely leached away close to the vein.

This review concerns the synthesis, characterization, and catalytic activity of microporous ferrierite zeolites and octahedral molecular sieves (QMS) and octahedral layer (OL) complexes of mixed valent manganese oxides. The ferrierite zeolite materials along with borosilicate materials have been studied as catalysts for the isomerization of n-butenes to isobutylene, which is an important intermediate in the production of methyltertiarybutylether (MTBE). The CMS materials have tunnels on the order of 4.6 to 6.9 A. These materials have been used in the total oxidation of CO to C02, decomposition of H2O2. dehydrogenation of CeHi4, C0H14 oxidation, 1-C4H3 isomerization, and CH4 oxidation. The manuscript will be divided into two major areas that describes zeolites and OMS/OL materials. Each of these two sections will include a discussion of synthesis, characterization, and catalytic activity.

Manganese oxides have long been known to be catalysts for a variety of gas clean-up reactions. Manganese/copper mbced oxide (Hopcalite) is the catalytically active component in gas mask filters for CO CO is converted to CO2 at room temperature [4]. Further applications of manganese oxide catalysts are the NH3 oxidation to N2 [5], the combustion of VOC [6,7] and methane [8], the oxidation of methanol [7], the O3 decomposition [9] and the NOx reduction [14]. Perovskite-type oxide catalysts (e.g. LaMnOs) have been proven to be effective catalysts for the total oxidation of chlorinated hydrocarbons [10].
