The aim of this book is to provide an introduction to the principles and applications of photochemistry and it is generally based on my lectures to second and third-year undergraduate students at Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU). 

He joined the staff of the Department of Chemistry and Materials, Manchester Metropolitan University in 1991 as a Lecturer in Physical Chemistry. He was promoted to Senior Lecturer in 1998. 

Benjamin R. Buckley was born in Nottingham he studied at Manchester Metropolitan University, from where he obtained a B.Sc. in 1999, and Loughborough University, from where he obtained his Ph.D. in 2003 under the supervision of Professor Philip C. Bulman Page. Following this, he worked as postdoctoral research associate with Professor Philip C. Bulman Page for one more year and took up his present position as a research fellow at Loughborough University in January 2004. His scientific interests include all aspects of asymmetric synthesis, in particular asymmetric organocatalysis.

John Dalton, regarded by most ehemists as the originator of the first scientifically fruitful chemical atomic theory, lived and worked in Manchester, England, for much of his life. Several commemorations of Dalton can be found in Manchester, from an unobstrusive plaque on the site where Dalton s laboratory once stood to a bronze statue outside the John Dalton building of Manchester Metropolitan University.
