Mamie effect

I can t call Mamie s style of interacting with patients a placebo effect, because as far as I know none of the treatments she gave me were placebos. But it did make me feel better, and some of the research I describe in this chapter indicates that it can also promote wellness. For want of a better term, I will call this the Mamie effect . The Marnie effect is the enhancement of treatment outcome that is produced by enhancing the therapeutic relationship. [Pg.132]

Oxidative phenol coupling (4, 499-500). Schwartz and Mami have effected oxidative para-ortho coupling of the benzyltetrahydroisoquinoline alkaloid (1) to (2) with TTFA in CH2CI2 ("78 to 20°, overnight) in 23% yield. This oxidative coupling is involved in the biosynthesis of morphine alkaloids, but it has... [Pg.580]

Exceptions from the rule usually show up as quantum-chemical effects which lower the total energies by also lowering the structural symmetries (see Section 3.4). On the other hand, we should add that there is a whole universe of amorphous structures which are deliberately excluded from the discussion if we follow Pauling s fifth rule but, admittedly, these refer to thennod)mami-cally metastable states in practically all cases. Indeed, the study of solid-state materials that do not exhibit translational invariance albeit chemical, local order - ordinary window glass is an ubiquitous example - has not been particularly excessive when compared with "normal" (that is, crystalline) solid-state materials, simply because the characterization of such matter is much more difficult for amorphous materials, ordinary X-ray or neutron diffraction loses its enormous analytical power. Thus, our atomistic knowledge of amorphous materials is far from being satisfactory, and Pauling s fifth rule should probably be taken with a pinch of salt. [Pg.30]

In a recent paper, Sipp amd Voltz (1983) have shown that, for describing the time dependence of a quenching reaction between am excited donor and an acceptor, it is necessary to consider mamy particle distribution functions which satisfy a set of coupled equations. This general method lifts several of the limitations quoted above, such as choice of coordinates and concentration effects. [Pg.340]

Sublethal endocrine disruption effects that can occur in the environment at low levels remind us that we still know relatively little about the overall effects of chemicals introduced into our environment. As we have seen, there are over fifty thousand chemicals in use today around the world. We have toxicological data on only about two thousand of these. It is unreasonable to assume that we have identified all of the toxic chemicals in use today, and the levels at which they are toxic to humans. Considering that chemicals can interact with each other in the environment and in the body—either increasing or decreasing the toxicity of each individual chemical—it is almost impossible to predict exactly what will happen from cmy specific chemical exposure. We find new chemicals every day, and mamy of these have specific and previously unknown toxicological mechanisms and effects. [Pg.161]
