Rottlerin (25) is a chromene based on a prenyl-phloroglucinol structure and isolated from the ancient vermifuge drug kamala (Mallotus philippinensis, Euphorbiaceae). It demonstrated efficacy in inhibiting PKC activity competitively with ATP, although the potency varied notably depending on the isoforms. The ICso value was 3 pM for the inhibition of... [Pg.853]

Kamala obtained from Mallotus philippinensis, and Kousso obtained from Hagenia abyssinica (= Brayera anthelmintica) also show activity against tapeworms infecting man and animals. The extracts of these plants contain phloroglucinols very similar to those present in male fern. The active principle of kamala is rottlerine 23 [46-48], while kousso contains a mixture of a- and P-kosins (24a,b) [49,50]. [Pg.77]

KAMALA which consists of the trichomes and glands separated from the fruits of Mallotus philippinensis (Lam) Miill. Arg., family Euphorbiaceae, a tree in India, Pakistan and the East Indies. Similar phlorogucine-type substances occur in Koso flos., which are the flowers of the Ethiopian tree Hapienia abyssinica, J.F.Gmelin, family Rosaceae. These two drugs have local use as anthelmintics against tapeworm. [Pg.120]

Lee et al. also applied this methodology to the synfliesis of natural products mallotophilippen C 154 and E 160 this family of natural products was isolated from a deciduous tree Mallotus philippinensis. Mallotophilippens has shown special biologic activity, and potentially treats rheumatoid arthritis [81,82]. The total synthesis of mallotophilippen C 154 is shown in Scheme 12.37.
