Beryllium-10 Be-10 is an activation product of Be-9. Of particular relevance is the inherent hazard represented by the radioactive inventory of the waste and is the summed product of the activity (Bq) of each radionuclide present and its corresponding Specific Instantaneous Toxic Potential (SITP). This can be adjusted for decay for longer timescales and it is usual to employ the full radionuclide inventory for waste streams as sampled and quantified by Magnox Electric Ltd and reported in the U.K. Radioactive Waste Inventory. ... 

After an initial failed attempt to privatize nuclear power with the rest of the British electricity industry in 1990, the government put the nuclear stations into two state-owned companies. Nuclear Electric for the English and Welsh stations, and Scottish Nuclear for the Scottish stations. In 1995 the more modern advanced gas cooled reactor (AGR) stations plus the new pressurized water reactor (PWR) at Sizewell were privatized in the form of a new company, British Energy pic. The older Magnox reactors were retained in a company called Magnox Electric. 

At the time new site licenses are issued, transfer all reactors to their post-privatization owners (Nuclear Electric and Scottish Nuclear for AGR and PWR assets, Magnox Electric for all Magnox reactors), and create a holding company called British Electric with the privatized Nuclear Electric and Scottish Nuclear as its subsidiaries.

The twenty Magnox stations are retained in the newly formed, nationalised Magnox Electric (ME). The intention is that ME will become part of British Nuclear Fuels pic (BNFL) and negotiations are in progress to facilitate this transition. 

Jones and Bolton have provided a detailed description of the approach employed by Magnox Electric for developing trend curves describing the DDR of Magnox RPVs. The authors stress that the advantage of the physically-based approach is that the trend curves underpinned in this way can be used with confidence when limited extrapolation is required into areas of neutron dose, dose rate or irradiation temperature which are not specifically covered by the surveillance database.

Magnox Electric, and its predecessor companies, have undertaken extensive studies over many years to develop detailed strategies, plans, processes and costings for the decommissioning of all of its stations. These plans are now being implemented at the three shutdown stations and are available for implementation in the future when the other stations reach the end of their operating lives.

The nuclear power stations were not included in the early privatisation programme but became a separate company known as Nuclear Electric. In 1996, the AGR and PWR assets of Nuclear Electric and Scottish Nuclear were combined and privatised as British Energy. The magnox assets of both companies were transferred to Magnox Electric, which became part of British Nuclear Euels in 1998. Magnox is currently owned by Energy Solutions.
