Luminous dials

Zinc sulfide is used in making luminous dials. X-ray and TV screens, and fluorescent lights. [Pg.54]

Zinc sulfate has been used as a mordant in calico printing for preserving wood and skins for the manufacture of other zinc salts for clarifying glue and in electrodeposition processes. The sulfide is used as a pigment and as a source of other pigments ZnS is used in X-ray and television screens and, with a trace of a radium or mesothorium salt, in luminous dials of watches. The telluride has been used as a photoconducting semiconductor. [Pg.998]

The discovery of the ECD dates back to a sensitive anemometer based on ions generated from a radioactive source made from radium extracted from the luminous dials of discarded aircraft instruments. This device was very sensitive but its response was perturbed by cigarette smoke. This was a drawback in the device and to discover its source, other compounds, such as halocarbons were tested. However, in 1948, this was something to merely note for the future. Looking back I realized that the key to invention is need. We did not at that time need a device to detect low levels of chloro-fluorocarbons and so the electron capture detector was in a sense prematurely invented. [2]... [Pg.24]

USE Pigment For paints, oilcloths, linoleum, leather, dental ruhber, etc., especially in the form of lithopone mixed with ZnO as "mineral white. Anhydr zinc sulfide is used in x-ray screens and with a trace of a radium or mesothorium salt In luminous dials of watches, etc. also television screens. [Pg.1601]

As you can imagine, this quality was very attractive to alchemists and others who dabbled in mysterious arts. The stones turned out to be barite, or barium sulfate. When heated with carbon, the barium sulfate converted to more luminous barium sulfide. The discoverers of these rocks dubbed them lapis Solaris, or sun stone. Since then, many other fight-storing compounds have been discovered. One of these, calcium sulfide, is commonly used to create theatrical effects and luminous dials. [Pg.88]

Artificial Radiation Artificial sources that expose the general population include certain consumer products, medical procedures, occupational sources, and general environment sources. Products with ionizing radiation include analog television sets and computer monitors, some smoke detectors, luminous dials on clocks, and luminous signs. Medical sources are gamma, beta, and X-rays for diagnostic and treatment procedures. Occupational sources involve jobs related to... [Pg.308]
