Sources of HC in the environment

It follows, therefore, that fossil fuels such as coal and oil provide the largest source of mononuelear and polynuclear aromatie HC. Contemporary anthropogenic sources of HC in the environment thus originate from two primary sourees i) point source releases such as spills at industrial facilities whieh utilize large volume of fossil fuels, or ii) chronic lower-level inputs sueh as from atmospheric deposition. [Pg.1618]

Both diesel-powered vehicles (mobile source) and industrial plants (stationary source) operate primarily under lean exhaust conditions i.e., excess oxygen content. This lean operation results in improved efficiency compared to stoichiometric operation, and these conditions are favorable for the oxidation of CO and HCs however, it results in a very challenging environment for the catalytic reduction of NOx. It is this challenge that the diesel community has been actively smdying as the... [Pg.97]
