Three isomeric tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxins were studied. All were insoluble in TFMS acid. To dissolve these compounds and form cation radicals, UV irradiation was necessary. The 1,2,3,4-tetrachloro compound was particularly sensitive to UV irradiation, and as a solid, even turned pink when exposed to ordinary fluorescent light. When subjected to constant UV irradiation, radical ions were induced rapidly. The change in the cation radical concentration was monitored by the ESR signal as illustrated in Figure 10. To determine whether the tetrachloro isomer had been converted to lower chlorinated derivatives after UV irradiation, the dissolved dioxin was then poured into ice water and recovered. The GLC retention time of the recovered dioxin was unchanged in addition, no new GLC peaks were observed. Isophorone usually contains 2—5% of the isomer P-isophorone [471-01-2] (3,5,5-trimethyl-3-cyclohexen-l-one). The term a-isophorone is sometimes used ia referring to the a,P-unsaturated ketone, whereas P-isophorone connotes the unconjugated derivative. P-lsophorone (bp 186°C) is lower boiling than isophorone and can be converted to isophorone by distilling at reduced pressure ia the presence of -toluenesulfonic acid (188). Isophorone can be converted to P-isophorone by treatment with adipic acid (189) or H on(Ill) acetylacetoate (190). Also due to the high barrier of inversion, optically active oxaziridines are stable and were prepared repeatedly. To avoid additional centres of asymmetry in the molecule, symmetrical ketones were used as starting materials and converted to oxaziridines by optically active peroxyacids via their ketimines (69CC1086, 69JCS(C)2648). In optically active oxaziridines, made from benzophenone, cyclohexanone and adamantanone, the order of magnitude of the inversion barriers was determined by racemization experiments and was found to be identical with former results of NMR study. Inversion barriers of 128-132 kJ moF were found in the A-isopropyl compounds of the ketones mentioned inversion barriers of the A-t-butyl compounds lie markedly lower (104-110 kJ moF ). Thus, the A-t-butyloxaziridine derived from adamantanone loses half of its chirality within 2.3 days at 20 C (73JCS(P2)1575). [Pg.200]

In the early 1930 s, when the prime research aim was the commercial synthesis of the sex hormones (whose structures had just been elucidated), the principal raw material available was cholesterol extracted from the spinal cord or brain of cattle or from sheep wool grease. The transition state is closer in energy to the car bocation and more closely resembles it than the alkyloxonium ion. Thus, structural features that stabilize car bocations stabilize transition states leading to them. The procedure of DG calculations can be subdivided in three separated steps [119-121]. At first, holonomic matrices (see below for explanahon) with pairwise distance upper and lower limits are generated from the topology of the molecule of interest. These limits can be further restrained by NOE-derived distance information which are obtained from NMR experiments. In a second step, random distances within the upper and lower limit are selected and are stored in a metric matrix. This operation is called metrization.
