The coexistence of two types of structures in transparent polyethylene filaments obtained by Porter and co-workers47 by forcing the melt through a capillary was proved by the existence of two peaks in the thermogram a high-temperature peak for ECC and a low-temperature peak for FCC (cf. Fig. 8 c). 

The overriding factor will be the filtration characteristics of the slurry whether it is fast filtering (low specific cake resistance) or slow filtering (high specific cake resistance). The filtration characteristics can be determined by laboratory or pilot plant tests. A guide to filter selection by the slurry characteristics is given in Table 10.3 which is based on a similar selection chart given by Porter et al. (1971).

The optical spectrum of a triplet aromatic carbene can be recorded at low temperature and generally consists of two or more absorption bands. The position of these bands is often similar to the closely related transitions found in the correpsonding radical (Trozzolo and Gibbons, 1967). For example, DPM has absorptions with maxima near 300 and 465 nm and the diphenyl-methyl radical exhibits maxima at 336 and 515 nm (Porter and Strachan, 1958). 

Chiral Lewis acid promoted atom transfer reaction (Kharasch reaction) of a-halo oxazolidinone imide 90 and 1-octene 92 has been reported by Porter et al. (Scheme 23) [78]. The enantioselective atom transfer utilizing Zn(OTf)2 and phenyl bisoxazoline ligand 93 as a chiral Lewis acid. The yields of the products, however, were quite low ranging from 5-15% and only moderate enantioselectivities were achieved (up to 40%).

Little experimental data on the photochemistry of compounds with B—0 bonds have been reported. Boron-hydride/oxygen mixtures are explosive. These explosions can be initiated by photochemical processes. Grimm and Porter have studied the photochemical decomposition of H2B2O3 using a low pressure mercury lamp. The UV spectrum of this compound is illustrated in Fig. 13. The rate of the reaction was increased when mercury was present as a photosensitizer.

Size exclusion chromatography has been greatly enriched recently by the advent of two commercial detectors, the real-time differential viscometer (DV) and the low angle laser light scattering (LALLS) photometer. The only DV detector currently available is offered by Viscotek in Porter, TX, as the model 100. 

The value of the MW exponent for the low shear-rate melt viscosity, usually accepted as 3.4—3.5 for linear polymers, has been called in question for PE. Schreiber and Bagley (164) reported a value of 4.22 for linear PE Porter and Johnson (165) had earlier reported values up to 8 for LDPE. For branched polymers an effect of this kind could be due to the effect mentioned in Section 5, in which a cross-over point is found on a log-log plot of viscosity vs. MW when linear and slightly branched polymers are compared, since the curve for the branched polymers must be steeper than that for the linear ones near the cross-over point.
