Rabaey et al. produced caustic soda from brewery wastewater while producing currents up to 1015 A m [150]. The lamellar-type reactor with a total liquid volume of 1.631 (66% anodic) produced caustic soda in the cathodic compartment taking advantage of the sodium diffusion from the anode and the proton consumption in the cathode compartments. The energy input as the ratio of electricity to caustic soda produced was 1.6 kWh kg NaOH, which corresponds to an operational cost of around 0.1 kg low-strength caustic soda. This price is lower than the market price of above 0.5 kg [150]. This impressive result should be confirmed after long-term performance to assess future applications. [Pg.170]
