Diderot even criticized a portrait of himself by Louis-Michel (exhibited at the Salon of 1767) in which he is shown holding a pen to paper looking up from his work. Diderot felt he looked more like a diplomat than a philosopher, since he is not captured deep in thought, but rather, in an artificial way (112). It would have been better if the painter left his subject alone, abandoned to his reveries (113). [Pg.101]

Vindication finally came in 1879, during a scientific meeting. A French obstetrician was subjecting the participants to an anti-Semmelweiss harangue when a short man stood up, went to the blackboard, and drew a picture of a streptococcus bacterium. This, he said, is the killer that Semmelweiss eliminated. The man was Louis Pasteur. Case closed. Soon doctors around the... [Pg.245]

In 1884, French chemist Henri Louis Le Chatelier enunciated a qualitative principle of great insight and generality pertaining to the responses of chemical equilibrium when subjected... [Pg.290]

The early scientific discoveries relating to heat induced aroma development can be traced to the work of Louis—Camille Maillard at the University of Nancy during the period of 1912 to 1936 (2). He published at least 8 papers on the subject of the reaction of sugars with amino acids. The Maillard Reaction, or so-called, non enzymatic browning reaction chemistry, has become the focus on a great amount of scientific work (3). [Pg.13]

It is a pleasure to be here with you today, especially since historians rarely get to address chemists, even young ones. By way of introduction I should say that I was briefly (until midway through my sophomore year) a chemistry major, thanks to a very enjoyable course and textbook by Professor Harry Sisler, who made chemistry seem beautiful. But then in sophomore year Professor Louis Fieser made organic chemistry seem monotonous—I could not stay interested in all those ways you can turn an aldehyde into a ketone. The history of science was for me a much better subject, and I have been at it ever since. [Pg.6]

In order to determine the independent effect of cellulose on manganese bioavailability, manganese tolerance tests were administered with 15 g of alpha cellulose (Sigma Co., Inc., St. Louis, MO) to six human subjects. The cellulose was given in gelatin capsules in addition to a 40 mg dose of manganese as MnCl. and 200 ml of deionized water. As seen in Figure 4, the addition of cellulose to... [Pg.116]
