Long-term rentals (LTR) have been used only in Portugal. In many aspects, they are similar to lease contracts. A major difference between an LTR and a lease contract is that in the case of the former, borrowers are required to make a cash collateral payment, which may be 30% of the related vehicle value. The cash collateral payment remains untapped over the term of the LTR if the borrower makes timely payments as agreed in the initial contract. In the case of nonpayments, the lender takes possession of the vehicle and the cash collateral payment is used to cover any losses the lender might incur if the price at which the vehicle was sold is below the final contract RV. LTR products have been part of the collateral for the LTR transactions, which were completed in 1999, 2000, 2001, and 2002 by Sofinloc. [Pg.445]

Car manufacturers and intermediaries offer various forms of rail-car leases, ranging from short-term, full-maintenance rentals to long-term leases requiring outside financing (3). Many chemical shippers have substantial investments or lease commitments in tank cars and similar rail equipment, including cars constmcted of or lined with special materials for particular products. Other cars may be thermally insulated to prevent excessive heat buildup in transit or for protection against fire. [Pg.256]

Table 19-3 provides an example of determining one s net worth. Assets are cash and other tangible property with monetary value. In this example, assets are divided into current assets and long-term assets. Liquid assets are current assets that are easily converted to cash. For example, a checking account is a liquid asset. Long-term assets include such items as real estate, personal possessions, and investment assets. Real estate may include the value of one s house and/or any rental property that one might own. Personal possessions might include such items as the market value of a person s car, furniture, jewelry, and computer. Investment assets include such items as the market value of mutual funds and retirement accounts. [Pg.322]
