Liquid assets

Liquid assets are those that can be realized almost immediately, such as cash, accounts receivable, and marketable securities. Although inventories are current assets, they must not be regarded as hquid assets because they cannot usually be converted into cash without winding up the business. 

This is usually defined as the ratio that liquid assets (debtors - - cash) bear to current liabilities. The ratio is a measure of the relation of short-term obligations to the funds likely to be available to meet them. 

Liquidity can be expressed as the ratio of liquid assets (cash plus debtors) to current liabilities. Such assets are also known as Quick assets , i.e. capable of swift realization.

Quick ratio A liquidity ratio that reflects a company s ability to satisfy its short-term obligations with its most liquid assets. 

Table 19-3 provides an example of determining one s net worth. Assets are cash and other tangible property with monetary value. In this example, assets are divided into current assets and long-term assets. Liquid assets are current assets that are easily converted to cash. For example, a checking account is a liquid asset. Long-term assets include such items as real estate, personal possessions, and investment assets. Real estate may include the value of one s house and/or any rental property that one might own. Personal possessions might include such items as the market value of a person s car, furniture, jewelry, and computer. Investment assets include such items as the market value of mutual funds and retirement accounts. 

Assets are commonly divided into the classifications of current, fixed, and miscellaneous. Current assets, in principle, represent capital which can readily be converted into cash. Examples would be accounts receivable, inventories, cash, and marketable securities. These are liquid assets. On the other hand, fixed assets, such as land, buildings, and equipment, cannot be converted into immediate cash. Deferred charges, other investments, notes and accounts due after 1 year, and similar items are ordinarily listed as miscellaneous assets under separate headings.

This raises a threshold question of die propriety of separating a company 6om its most liquid assets. According to legend, a lawyer, upon learning of securitization, uttered that "it is a perversion of natural law if the jewels of a company could be spirited away by lawyers trickery."
