This unit is good lo pre-thicken feed to centrifugal filters and similar applications. One cyclone may satisfy a requirement, or the units can be arranged in parallel for large capacities or in series for removal of extreme fines. See Figure 4-53 for a counter-current wash system. Solids as small as 10 microns can be separated.

In Fig. 6, we show the thickness of the boundary layer as a function of the stream velocity of supercritical CO2 for temperatures of 325 K (solid line) and 375 K (dashed line) at a fixed pressure of 300 bars. In this regime, the density of CO2 is 0.94 g/cc and its viscosity is 7.4 x lO" g/cm-s. The thickness of the laminar sublayer is seen to depend inversely on the stream velocity. This figure indicates that for a stream velocity of 200 cm/s, the boundary layer thickness is about 2 microns. 

Taking k as 10 6 dyne, and E as lO o dyne/cm, this ratio is unity when a is about 3-5 X 10 8 cm, and negligible for beams of thickness as large as a micron. Thus, on the visible scale, the curvature-elastic constants are always negligible compared with the ordinary elastic constants, unless the latter are zero. 

Recently the Franklin Institute has set up a long-path infrared spectrometer (up to 500 meters) in Los Angeles to determine, among other studies, the ozone concentrations in smog by its absorption at the 9.6-micron band.
