Broader Implications

The calculations I ve presented here support the idea that SO2 self-shielding is at least in part responsible for the S-MIF observed in Archean rocks. Because of the approximations made in the SO2 isotopologue synthetic spectra, it caimot be claimed that SO2 photolysis is the only source of MIF. Experimental data needed to improve the isotopologue spectra include measurements of vibronic band shifts for all four sulfur isotopologues and for the and isotopo-

The feasibility of identifying these edges of water base pairs has been supported by our studies of mitomycin C interacting with the model system for AT base pairs 29). Interactions of either component with mitomycin C are not observed but a complex is formed when all three components are present. Chemical shift changes observed in the NMR spectra support the structure 47 for the termolecular complex. The broader implication is that mitomycin C will likewise recognize the minor groove side of a G-C pair (it is known to alkylate the guanidine on this side)31 ... 

The limited acid-hydrolysis results, if substantiated, have broader implications. They suggest that rapid hydrolysis of pesticide wastes in acidified artificial sediment/water slurries may be an attractive method for the intentional disposal and degradation of pesticide wastes.

As already mentioned, Bourgine and Stewart (2004) arrive at the same conclusion, based on an elaborate and elegant mathematical treatment. They state in fact that autopoiesis is not a necessary and sufficient condition for hfe. This chapter will focus on o- and p-quinone methides and will be divided into two parts. The first will present methods for generating quinone methides in photochemical and solvolysis reactions and will emphasize how the structure and stability of quinone methides dictates the pathways for their formation. The second section will discuss the results of experiments to characterize the reactivity of quinone methides with nucleophilic reagents, and the broader implications of these results. We know from all of the discussion of Social Security that our population is aging and that the ratio of workers to retired people is decreasing. That is why we worry about the future solvency of Social Security. But we can consider the broader implications of that change and conclude that if we don t have increases in productivity per worker, the standard of living will decline for everyone. The stock market will drop in value, the dollar will drop in value relative to other currencies, or there will be inflation. Something will happen to cause the average standard of living to decline if we cannot increase productivity per worker. 

This approach may also have broader implications to the field of clinical pharmacogenetics and other disciplines where exposure-outcome relationships are dependent upon inherited factors and the cumulative effects of repeated exposures. 

When considering whether there is inventive step, the question must always be asked Who is the person skilled in the art Who is presumed to know all the relevant prior art A person skilled in the art is presumed to have access to the entire state of the art and, in particular, it is presumed to possess common general knowledge applicable to his field of interest. Furthermore, it is part of the normal activities of the skilled person to select from the material known to him the most appropriate item. The skilled person is not regarded as having any inventive ingenuity. So, the teaching of a document may have narrower implications for a skilled person and broader implications for a potential inventor who first perceives the problem which the future invention is intended to solve. 

Trityltetrafluoroborate has been observed to equilibrate ketals. This may have broader implications in synthesis because it occurs in the absence of a protic acid. OH... 

In addition, the recent demonstration of the 32kDa protein as an essential component of the higher plant photosystem II reaction center (6,7) has added a new dimension to this interest with still broader implications for crop improvement in agriculture. 

The chemiluminescent reactions of e aq with dyes represent a new process which may have broader implications. The formation of excited dye in Reaction 8 should lead to triplet formation via intersystem crossing, although the yield would be low because of competition from Reaction 1.
