The electrochemical oxidation of phenols produces quinones that can be used as dienophiles for the Diels-Alder reaction. A typical example is shown in Scheme 14, where a lithium perchlorate/nitromethane system and an electrode coated with a PTFE [poly-(tetrafluoroethylene)] fiber, to create a hydrophobic reaction layer. [Pg.182]

The electropolymerization of ferrocene/thiophene conjugates [65] was conducted by oxidation on a Pt electrode and led to the deposition of a monolayer of poly (thiophene). The electropolymerization was performed from several solution systems, such as tetrabutylammonium hexafluorophosphate/acetonitrile and lithium perchlorate/acetonitrile, at a concentration of 0.1 M. Constant potential experiments (+ 2.0 V) for a definite time were used to effect polymerization. Polythiophene is readily produced by inserting a working electrode, counterelectrode, and reference electrode into a nonaqueous electrolyte in which 0.1 to 1.0 M thiophene is dissolved and then increasing the cell potential to greater than 1.6 V (versus SCE). Salts such as lithium or tetrabutylammonium perchlorate, hexafluo-rophosphate, or trifluoromethylsulfonate are typical electrolytes. Acetonitrile, ben-zonitrile, dichloromethane, and tetrahydrofuran are suitable solvents. As previously discussed for polypyrrole, polythiophene has been prepared in aqueous solutions [247].
