Lister developing first

Development of materials for medicine apphcations was first recorded in 1860, when doctor J. Lister developed aseptic techniques used in surgery. Previous attempts with use of biomaterials frequently ended up with infections spreading throughout the patients bodies, thus causing demise. Since then, further developments started to spread rapadly. Some discoveries were made almost by the way, e.g. during the Second World War lack of... [Pg.130]

Antimicrobial material was first developed in 1867 by Lister who first demonstrated the relationship between fibrous materials and disease. Since then, many innovative antimicrobial materials have been developed. In general, antimicrobial properties of textile materials can be obtained by two different... [Pg.244]

However, the development of microbicidally active phenol derivatives started from phenol itself, from carbolic acid, the antiseptic properties of whidh were detected in 1860 and first used by Lister in 1867 to kill bacteria on medical instruments, surgical dressings and wounds. The development of chemical disinfection revolutionized progress in hospitals, particularly in surgery. It was possible to successfully employ and develop surgical techniques which in the past had been feasible but unpractical because of the associated unavoidable massive and generally fatal infections. [Pg.141]
