Liquid polarized backlights

FIGURE 10.7 Power consumption simulation for a 2.2-in. full-color OLED display using Universal Display s phosphorescent OLEDs, small-molecule fluorescent devices, and polymer OLEDs along with a comparison of the power consumed by an active-matrix liquid crystal display backlight. R G B= 3 6 1, 50% polarizer efficiency, and 30% of pixels lit. (From Mahon, J.K., Adv. Imaging, June, 28, 2003. With permission.)... [Pg.630]

In most LCDs, the liquid crystal only modifies the polarization state of polarized incident light. Because light generated by a backlight is unpolarized, a polarizer must be used ahead of the liquid crystal panel to produce polarized incident light. Also in order to block light a polarizer... [Pg.519]

After assembly of the cell, most displays require polarizing filters to be laminated onto each side to make the electro-optic effect visible. These filters are usually attached by pressure-sensitive adhesive, and one may incorporate a reflector or transflector according to the mode in which the device is to be used. In most cases, the liquid crystal panel is assembled into a module, which incorporates the drive and decoder electronics together with a backlight, before it is sold. [Pg.764]

The nonpolar and semipolar nitride devices also have the potential to use the polarization light emission. This property is especially beneficial for backlighting liquid crystal displays (LCD) and projectors. The polarized light sources do not require polarizing filters and thus the screens can be made thinner, lighter, and more energy efficient. [Pg.24]
