Liposomes proliposome methods

There are many methods to prepare liposomes. This review will discuss only some of the commonly used methods. These include liposomes made by thin film hydration, reverse phase evaporation, freeze-drying, and proliposome methods.

To increase the deposition surface for phospholipids or to make much thinner Llms, a method has been developed in which the lipids are dried down onto a Lnely divided particulate support such as powdered sodium chloride, sorbitol, lactose, or polysaccharide, giving a product known as proliposomes. When hydrating the dry powder while mixing with a whirl mixer, the phospholipids swell whereas the support rapidly dissolves to give a liposomal suspension of MLVs in an aqueous solution. 

MEI method of liposome preparation is similar to the reported ethanol injection method (16, 17), proliposome preparation (17, 18), and coacervation methods (19). The differences... 

Zhang and Zhu [60] have combined two methods in preparing liposomes, by hydrating particulate-based proliposomes followed by freeze-drying. This approach has been reported to enhance the entrapment of amikacin compared to the same vesicles before freeze-drying or vesicles prepared by the thin film method.
