Lipoproteins in serum

In addition to small organic molecules or metal ions, proteins may have other components tightly associated with them. Nucleoproteins, for instance, contain noncovalently bound DNA or RNA, as in some of the structural proteins of viruses. Lipoproteins contain associated lipids or fatty acids and may also carry cholesterol, as in the high-density and low-density lipoproteins in serum.

VLDL remnant is enriched with apo B -100 and the CM remnant with apo B-48. Previously, we characterized lipoproteins that were separated from serum by human anti-apo B-100 and anti-apo A1 monoclonal antibody-coupled im-munoaffinity mixed gels, and discussed the similarities of these lipoproteins to remnant lipoproteins. This revealed that the cholesterol in these lipoproteins, referred to as RLP-C, reflected the level of remnant lipoproteins in serum. The incubation study with rat peritoneal macrophages, RLP, separated from VLDL using the immunoafFinity mixed gels, increased cholesteryl oleate incorporation into macrophages, which is a precursor of foam cells in atherosclerotic lesions...
