If we make a somewhat more realistic molecular model, such as that of linked springs (Hopfield),2 then just, as the volume of the sphere is dependent on a great variety of external effects, so must this structure respond at the molecular level to these external effects, but now all effects become directional. The idea of allosteric equilibrium (e.g., in hemoglo-... [Pg.91]

The wavy lines represent quantum spring bonds between different imaginary-time representations of the same atom. The dashed lines represent real pair-potential interactions, each diminished by a factor P, between the atoms, linking corresponding imaginary times. Figure B3.3.11. Link-Suspended Basket Centrifuges In centrifuges with diameters larger than 762 mm (30 in), the basket, curb, curb cover, and drive form a rigid assembly flexibly suspended from three fixed posts (also known as a three-column centrifuge). The three suspension members may be either chain hnks or stiff rods in ball-and-socket joints and are spring-loaded. The suspended assembly has restrained freedom to oscillate to compensate for a normal out-of-balance condition. The drive is vertical with more efficient power transmission compared to the base-bearing type. [Pg.1735]

The forces which hold atoms together (the interatomic bonds) which act like little springs, linking one atom to the next in the solid state (Fig. 4.1). [Pg.36]

Imagine, now, a solid held together by such little springs, linking atoms between two planes within the material as shown in Fig. 6.1. For simplicity we shall put atoms at the comers of cubes of side Tq. To be correct, of course, we should draw out the atoms in the positions dictated by the crystal structure of a particular material, but we shall not be too far out in our calculations by making our simplifying assumption - and it makes drawing the physical situation considerably easier ... [Pg.58]

A simple springs-in-series model represents the representative volume element loaded in the 2-direction as in Figure 3-11. There, the matrix is the soft link in the chain of stiffnesses. Thus, the spring stiffness for the matrix is quite low. We would expect, on this basis, that the matrix deformation dominates the deformation of the composite material. [Pg.130]

Most ventilators are powered in one direction with spring return. Thus, a pneumatic ventilator might be described as pressure to open or pressure to close. With the pressure to open type the ventilator will fail to the closed position under the influence of the return spring, ensuring the building remains weatherproof. Where ventilators are installed mainly as smoke ventilators it is important that they fail to the open position, so pressure to close ventilators should be used. A fusible link is normally fitted into the controls so that in the event of fire, affected ventilators will open automatically to release smoke and heat. [Pg.427]

Elastomers are amorphous polymers that have the ability to stretch out and spring back to their original shapes. These polymers must have low Tg values and a small amount of cross-linking to prevent the chains from slipping over one another. In addition, the chains must have an irregular shape to prevent crystallite... [Pg.1216]

Fire dampers are an assembly of louvers that are arranged to close to prevent the passage of flame and heat. Dampers are installed in ventilation openings or shafts to provide a fire rated barrier equal to the surrounding barrier. They are activated by spring release by the melting of a fusible link, or by remote control signals. [Pg.173]

If Ni = 1, when chains are linked together a network will not be formed but just longer chains. When there are two or more, each site can lead to a network spring if more than two hydrophobes can cluster to form a node. (Note that this is different from the situation of a chemically crosslinked network where only two chains would be joined by the formation of the link. In this latter case a value of N > 2 is required for a network.) The potential number of network springs is... [Pg.44]

Each submolecule will experience a frictional drag with the solvent represented by the frictional coefficient /0. This drag is related to the frictional coefficient of the monomer unit (0- If there are x monomer units per link then the frictional coefficient of a link is x(0- If we aPply a step strain to the polymer chain it will deform and its entropy will fall. In order to attain its equilibrium conformation and maximum entropy the chain will rearrange itself by diffusion. The instantaneous elastic response can be thought of as being due to an entropic spring . The drag on each submolecule can be treated in terms of the motion of the N+ 1 ends of the submolecules. We can think of these as beads linked... [Pg.187]

The results were compared to MD-simulations [317]. Whereas the scattering function of pure PEO could be well described, the dynamics of the salt-loaded samples deviates from the predictions obtained with various electrostatic interaction models. The best but still not perfect and - at least for longer times -unphysical model assumes Hookean springs between chains to simulate the Na-ion mediated transient cross-links [317]. [Pg.189]

In ball-and-stick models, balls with holes drilled at appropriate angles are used to represent the atoms, and sticks or springs are used for the bonds to link them. The resultant model is rather like the framework model, but has representations of the atoms. Models tend to look better than the framework type, but in practice tend to be bigger and less user friendly. [Pg.52]

An ozone hole over Antarctica was discovered with especially low concentrations of ozone above that continent in their spring (Northern Hemisphere s fall). This was linked to CFCs. [Pg.216]
