Free radicals are generated at the wood surface during irradiation. The rate of free-radical formation is enhanced when moisture content increases from 0 to 6.3%. Electron spin resonance and UV light absorption studies on the behavior of generated free radicals and their interactions with oxygen molecules to form hydroperoxides have revealed that free radicals and singlet oxygen play important roles in discoloration and deterioration reactions of wood surfaces. [Pg.293]

The procedure of simultaneous extracting-spectrophotometric determination of nitrophenols in wastewater is proposed on the example of the analysis of mixtures of mono-, di-, and trinitrophenols. The procedure consists of extraction concentrating in an acid medium, and sequential back-extractions under various pH. Such procedures give possibility for isolation o-, m-, p-nitrophenols, a-, P-, y-dinitrophenols and trinitrophenol in separate groups. Simultaneous determination is carried out by summary light-absorption of nitrophenol-ions. The error of determination concentrations on maximum contaminant level in natural waters doesn t exceed 10%. The peculiarities of application of the sequential extractions under fixed pH were studied on the example of mixture of simplest phenols (phenol, o-, m-, />-cresols). The procedure of their determination is based on the extraction to carbon tetrachloride, subsequent back-extraction and spectrophotometric measurement of interaction products with diazo-p-nitroaniline. [Pg.126]

To determine of Ce(IV) in acid soluble single crystals, a simple and sensitive method is proposed. The method is based on the reaction of tropeoline 00 oxidation by cerium(IV) in sulfuric acid solution with subsequent measurement of the light absorption decrease of the solution. The influence of the reagent concentration on the analysis precision is studied. The procedure for Ce(IV) determination in ammonium dihydrophosphate doped by cerium is elaborated. The minimal determined concentration of cerium equal to 0.04 p.g/ml is lower than that of analogous methods by a factor of several dozens. In an article published independently at the same time, Stuehr and Ikeda-Saito89 used the purified bNOS and iNOS to reach the same conclusions. While the paper was under review, the authors mention that White and Marietta had reported earlier that the iron was a heme and was used as an oxidant. Using the same type of study, they found that the iron prophyrin and its CO derivative had the expected properties and proposed that the iron is penta-coordinated, with a cysteine thiolate as the fifth coordinate. A third publication confirmed the results when McMillan and coworkers90 used bNOS grown in human kidney cells. These workers obtained similar data for the light absorption of the enzyme and its CO spectrum. They also speculate on very similar sequences in the three types of purified enzyme that might be the porphyrin binding site. [Pg.984]
