The field of synthetic enzyme models encompasses attempts to prepare enzymelike functional macromolecules by chemical synthesis [30]. One particularly relevant approach to such enzyme mimics concerns dendrimers, which are treelike synthetic macromolecules with a globular shape similar to a folded protein, and useful in a range of applications including catalysis [31]. Peptide dendrimers, which, like proteins, are composed of amino acids, are particularly well suited as mimics for proteins and enzymes [32]. These dendrimers can be prepared using combinatorial chemistry methods on solid support [33], similar to those used in the context of catalyst and ligand discovery programs in chemistry [34]. Peptide dendrimers used multivalency effects at the dendrimer surface to trigger cooperativity between amino acids, as has been observed in various esterase enzyme models [35]. 

In conclusion, many methods are available for the immobihzation of metal complexes with diazaligands. The biphasic liquid methods seem to be more versatile - especially in the case of ionic liquids, where modification of the ligands is not needed. Very good results can also be obtained with solid supports, although the surface effects, which can be positive or negative. 

Arene and olefin compounds, pure or in admixture, are efficient ligands in promoting the aggregation of platinum atoms from mononuclear species to ligand-stabilized soluble clusters and solid-supported nanoparticles (Scheme 14). 

Even when the trifluoroaeetyl-(+)-camphor ligand is linked to a solid support (Hypersil silica 205d), if retains its activity both in terms of yield and optical induction. 

A given ligand system was first prepared on the solid support, and a small collection of catalysts (library 1) generated by adding 11 different metals and in one case no metal (Scheme 23).119 It turned out that the best ee-value (19%) was in fact obtained in the metal-free system. There are certain catalyst systems which appear to be more amenable to combinatorial studies than others. For example, libraries of small peptides as ligands are particularly easy to prepare (e.g., on solid supports), and due to their modular nature high diversity is possible. High diversity is also readily achieved when using mixtures of two or more chiral monodentate ligands.122 This novel approach offers many perspectives. 

Asymmetric catalysis provides access to several synthetically important compounds, and immobilized catalysts together with solid-supported chiral ligands have been equally instrumental. Chiral ligands immobilized on a solid support provide the advantage of being rapidly removable post-reaction while retaining their activity for further applications [139]. 

Another metal-catalyzed microwave-assisted transformation performed on a polymer support involves the asymmetric allylic malonate alkylation reaction shown in Scheme 12.4. The rapid molybdenum(0)-catalyzed process involving thermostable chiral ligands proceeded with 99% ee on a solid support. When TentaGel was used as as support, however, the yields after cleavage were low (8-34%) compared with the corresponding solution phase microwave-assisted process (monomode cavity) which generally proceeded in high yields (>85%) [30],...

An intramolecular Heck cyclization strategy was developed for the construction of indole and benzofuran rings on solid support [82], enabling rapid generation of small-molecular libraries by simultaneous parallel or combinatorial synthesis. Sn2 displacement of resin-bound y-bromocrotonyl amide 97 with o-iodophenol 96 afforded the cyclization precursor 98. A subsequent intramolecular Heck reaction using Jeffery s ligand-free conditions furnished, after double bond tautomerization, the resin-bound benzofurans, which were then cleaved with 30% TFA in CH2CI2 to deliver the desired benzofuran derivatives 99 in excellent yields and purity. 

Parallel synthesis of 62 different fucosylated tripeptides resulted in two ligands with submicromolar affinity for the P-selectin however, the desired activity for the E-selectin was not observed.98 For the E-selectin selectivity, it was necessary to incorporate a hydroxyl group that mimics the 4-hydroxyl of the central Gal in SLex in addition to a Fuc-residue and a carboxylate to obtain ligands with > 10-fold increased activity over that of the SLex tetrasaccharide.81 One of the best ligands was obtained from Thr(a-Fuc)-OEt, which was first /V-acylated with a hydroxyl amino acid and then elongated with a di-acid to furnish the acid mimic of the sialic acid carboxylate (Fig. 14.4). This approach was further developed as a solid-phase method where the molecule was linked to a solid support through the invariable fucosyl moiety.99...
