Relative Effectiveness of Multivalent Cations and Monovalent Cations in Changing Phase Behavior... 

The greater effectiveness of multivalent cations as compared to monovalent cations in changing phase behavior has been recognized recently in the literature. Fleming, et al. (7), report a calcium to sodium effectiveness ratio of 14 and a magnesium to sodium effectiveness ratio of 16 for North Burbank crude oil and a surfactant system composed of 5.0 percent Petronate TRS lOB and 3.0 percent isobutyl alcohol. That paper does not indicate whether the ratios were determined at other surfactant concentrations. 

Our group has also investigated the effect of multivalency on measured enantioselectivity values using similar analyte systems [53]. In this case, conversion from monovalent to bivalent systems did provide an expected... 

The pH dependence of melittin conformation indicates the critical role played by two groups titrating at pH 8.8. This is confirmed by the a-helical structure of formaldehyde-treated melittin. The ordering effect of multivalent anions or of high salt concentration may also be related to a shielding effect of these groups (Fig. 3, 5).
