Lift off

In addition to the three basic microfabrication steps discussed above, other fabrication techniques are quite useful. We will briefly discuss a few of them, namely lift-off, annealing, liquid phase photopolymerization, micromolding, soft lithography, electroplating, sacrificial processes, bonding, surface modification, laser-assisted processes, planarization, and fabrication on flexible substrates and curved surfaces. Some of these techniques do not necessarily belong to the traditional repertoire of microfabrication of ICs. However, they have proved very useful for the creation of other types of microdevices and systems such as MEMS, microfluidics, and labs on chips. [Pg.54]

As discussed above, the patterning of a thin film layer usually involves deposition of the thin film followed by photolithography and masked etching. However, this may not be the most convenient method for some materials, especially some metals, considering factors such as etch type (wet or dry), availability of etchants, etch rates, masking materials, and selectivity. Lift-off is an alternative method to pattern such materials while avoiding the etching step. [Pg.54]

API standards for balanced and unbalanced seals are good guidelines too low a pressure for a balanced seal may encourage face lift-off. [Pg.940]

A flare performance chart for the hydrocarbon being flared, should be consulted for additional guidelines on flare tip design. Figure 3 provides a provisional performance chart for propane. Filtering the tube suspension through a 0.2 xm pore ceramic paper leaves a uniform black deposit on the paper and can produce aligned CNT films [30]. The deposited material was transferred on a thin Teflon sheet by pressing the tube-coated side of the filter on the plastic and then the filter was lifted off to expose the surface. Scanning electron microscopic study reveals that the tubes are highly aligned perpendicular to the Teflon surface [30]. [Pg.80]

In addition, they are usually constructed without isolation valves on the fuel supply lines. As a result the final connection in the pipework cannot be leak-tested. In practice, it is tested as far as possible at the manufacturer s works but often not leak-tested on-site. Reference 32 reviews the fuel leaks that have occurred, including a major explosion at a CCGT plant in England in 1996 due to the explosion of a leak of naphtha from a pipe joint. One man was seriously injured, and a 600-m chamber was lifted off its foundations. The reference also reviews the precautions that should be taken. They include. selecting a site where noise reduction is not required or can be achieved w ithout enclosure. If enclosure is essential, then a high ventilation rate is needed it is often designed to keep the turbine cool and is far too low to disperse gas leaks. A peak velocity through the flare end (tip) of as much as 0.5 mach is generally considered a peak, short term. A more normal steady state velocity of 0.2 mach is for normal conditions and prevents flare/lift off [58]. Smokeless (with steam injection) flare should be sized for conditions of operating smokelessly, which means vapor flow plus steam flow [33c]. The pressure-relief valve has the physical appearance of a pressure governor. It operates in the reverse manner to a governor, that is, on exceeding the set pressure, the valve lifts off its seat, rather than being forced onto its seat, as in a governor. Gas is therefore allowed to flow through the valve. [Pg.274]

Figure 40.20 shows a typical relief valve. System pressure simply acts under the valve disk at the inlet of the valve. A link between laminar and turbulent lifted flames has been demonstrated based on the observation of a continuous transition from laminar to turbulent lifted flames, as shown in Figure 4.3.13 [56]. The flame attached to the nozzle lifted off in the laminar regime, experienced the transition by the jet breakup characteristics, and became turbulent lifted flames as the nozzle flow became turbulent. Subsequently, the liftoff height increased linearly and finally blowout (BO) occurred. This continuous transition suggested that tribrachial flames observed in laminar lifted flames could play an important role in the stabilization of turbulent lifted flames. Recent measurements supported the existence of tribrachial structure at turbulent lifted edges [57], with the OH zone indicating that the diffusion reaction zone is surrounded by the rich and lean reaction zones. [Pg.63]
