The FIAT Review of German Science includes a number of references to unpublished work carried out in Germany during the war. This was issued in German in 86 volumes. The OTS has prepared a list of volume titles and prices of this set (26). An English translation of the FIAT Review is being published by the 0. W. Liebiger Research Laboratories, but only a few volumes have been issued to date (27). [Pg.481]

Justus von Liebig, professor of chemistry at the University of Giessen, Germany, created the first scientific research and teaching laboratory in 1833 (Michaelis 2003). Other scientists of Liebig s era usually worked alone at home or in libraries so Liebig s laboratory was unique in that it enabled scientists to work together, to converse with others about scientific subjects, and to learn from each other thus, it provided an excellent environment for students to study and it served as a model for other institutions worldwide. [Pg.147]

In organizing his industrial research laboratories, Duisbeig retained the collective bench and work area devised several decades earlier by Liebig (125), However, he separated each work space from the others by shoulder-high shelves. In this manner, neighboring chemists still could communicate easily with one another, but they could not see exactly what... [Pg.67]

Armed with these methods, Liebig and his students between them had a dominant role in the emerging field of chemistry. From the mid-i830s, he attracted more and better students internationally, and he offered a well-structured course in laboratory practice in which practical training and research blended... [Pg.131]

The Research Council of Norway (NFR) and the Institute of Marine Research (IMR) funded this study. Local fishermen. Directorate of Fisheries, Finnmark, and Vaerlandet School are greatly acknowledged for assistance with sample collection. HER is grateful to Paul Blowers and Rachel Bonfield (CEFAS) for training in the analytical method and Penny L. Liebig and Ingrid Svaeren for help with laboratory work. [Pg.22]
