Screening large pools of compounds has several disadvantages, and often results in missed or false activities. To obviate such limitations, different pooling and structure identification strategies such as orthogonal libraries and binary encoded libraries have been developed and reported to provide examples of bioactive molecules. 

Molecular tags overcome the chemical sensitivity and orthogonal protection required by both peptide and oligonucleotide encoding. Two such methods have been developed and applied to the synthesis of both peptide and nonoligomeric libraries. Binary encoding technology [71-73] has been used to identify selective CAII inhibitors from two libraries (6,727 members and 1,143 members) [419, 420]. The first library was composed of acyclic and cyclic amino acids and the second library was composed of dihydrobenzopyrans. The arylsul-phonamide moiety, a known pharmacophore for CAII inhibition, was included in order to bias the library. The active compounds identified from the first library exhibited a preference for lipophilic groups at R2 (library 35 Kd 4 nM) [419]. Again active members from the 1143 dihydrobenzopy-ran compound library were 4-carboxybenzene sulphonamide derivatives (library 36 Kd 15 nM) [420],...

Several classification methods for binary encoded infrared spectra have been tested by Isenhour et. al.. The library of 2600 spectra contained 200 spectra from each of 13 mutually exclusive chemical classes. Molecular formulas were and 139 intervals in the infra-... 

Hierarchical clustering was applied to find out those wavelengths in binary encoded infrared spectra with the smallest correlations. The result was utilized for a library search C104D- Methods similar to pattern recognition have been used for the detection of atmospheric constituents by a CO2 laser C214, 2153. 

Baldwin [24] did not report details about the library encoding, but the number of necessary tags can be easily determined from the reaction scheme. The monomer set A required three tags for complete encoding of the monomers via the previously described binary code (Figure 9.6) set B required...
